This Sunday 2nd January, Hannah Werdmuller will be performing at the House of Java/House of Yogurt, 2922 Geer Road, Turlock. 7pm, free as a bird!

If you're in the area on Saturday 1st January, why not come celebrate the New Year (and nurse your hangovers) indoors at the Queen Bean Coffee House, 1126 14th Street, Modesto, with a nice hot drink and an evening of acoustic music brought to you by Hannah Werdmuller, with masterful support from Dan Vallerand (http://www.myspace.com/danvallerand/) and maybe one other act. Show starts at 7.30pm, and is also free.

Hannah Werdmuller is an independent singer-songwriter from Edinburgh, UK, who has been writing and recording music for over 15 years. With "a great talent for pulling together great and overflowing lyrical content" (**** Vinyl Puppet), Hannah's music has been compared to that of Joan Armatrading, Kathryn Williams and Ani DiFranco, but it is her originality, powerful vocals, catchy tunes and clever lyrics that define her. Hannah is currently a finalist in the People's Music Awards folk and female solo artist charts. Hannah will be selling copies of her debut full-length album, Pre-Apocalyptic Love Song.

I dug up a sneak peak from the show coordinator's flickr site:

This show looks so fking rad. I can't wait to go see it.
Deva has delicious food, coffee, and Newcastle on tap (thumbs up), and this art show will be up through December 4th. Check it out if you're in the J-street, downtown modesto area.

Goes great with election day!

This is a great political satire put on by my friends in the Iron Ring Theater group. I just got back from opening night, where I was thoroughly impressed. They managed to fuse film noir with the graphic novel in a live performance (not an easy task), which I found stylistically reminiscent of Sin City.

If you go, make sure to get a seat in the central area. Seems it is best viewed from a frontal vantage point. It's being performed at the Youth Center in Turlock, which is in the same parking lot area as The Taco Trucks. It's that dark little building across the lot. I'd talk more about it, but don't want to spoil it. It's fun to pick out all the political and social commentary on your own as it unfolds.

Strong language, prolly should leave the kids at home if you got 'em. Only one weekend of performances left >

I want to let you all know about Modesto Sound, which is a recording studio for teens that is run by an incredibly nice woman and is hot damn diggity cheap. I just recorded a song there and was exceptionally impressed.

Several things.

I have just had dinner at Tasty Thai in Modesto and holy shit is it good.

Does anyone have a picture of when Denis RVs in Turlock read Penis RVs? It would make my life immeasurably more satisfying.

Also, I gather that there was some controversy over the holiday messages this winter at stores like Target, WalMart etc. in the area, with stores being pressured by Christian consumers to replace 'Happy Holidays' messages with the unambiguous 'Merry Christmas', with all but WalMart conceding. What are your thoughts on that?

Oh, and I also want to express my glee that the House of Beef in Riverdale is right next to the House of Prayer.

Ok...I'm no angel & I don't mean to start a witch hunt, but has anyone ever looked up sex offenders in Turlock? My parents come from a huge suburban town in the Bay Area & they only have about 20 listings. Whereas Turlock has a whopping 97. I'm thinking it's just good to be aware of who you might be living next to.

Free Show! Jeff Bonilla!
Free one-man acoustic/rhythm show featuring Jeff Bonilla. June 2nd and June 10th!

Jeff is an up-and-coming solo singer/songwriter playing acoustic guitar and bongo-style drums. The venue is cozy, the show is free, and the people are friendly! All that's asked is that you consider buying a cup of coffee or a muffin from the cafe. :P

Thursday Jun 2 |AND| Friday Jun 10
both at 7:00 PM

J Street Cafe
1030 J St
Modesto, CA 95350

Jeff is a good friend of mine, and a really talented musician. You may have seen him in his old band, Dodgy Hosa (now defunct). He's a great guy and is taking off with his own solo career! It's at a cafe, so there's plenty of good coffee and good food if you so desire. The show's free and in a friendly atmoshpere, so come out on the 2nd or the 10th (or both!) to relax and enjoy some music. Bring your friends! :D
